Four years ago, in September 2018, Doan Nguyen Phuong Danh (at that time a 12th grader at Nguyen Thuong Hien High School, Ho Chi Minh City) first released a redesigned version of the history textbook for grades 10, 11, and 12. with full content distilled from the original. The book series was quickly supported by both students and teachers, because this was the first time students “engaged” in changing the traditional interface of the textbook, even if it was only at the level of individual projects.

Current textbooks are not designed to attract students

According to Nam Bao, the current textbooks, although doing a very good job in disseminating knowledge, are not attractive to students, such as the cover of the book is simply designed, the presentation of the lesson content is not diverse but often follows a pattern. available… This is in stark contrast to the English academic books that male students have ever had access to.

“Most foreign books invest in many colors and images, each lesson is designed in different styles. Through this personal project, Bao hopes to inspire more learning for his peers, as well as hope that the education industry will put itself into the aesthetic perspective of students more when editing textbooks, instead because it only focuses on academic matters. “The current set of books has an adequate amount of knowledge, but what is more necessary is the motivation of students to explore and learn more after each lesson. Passionate about creativity since elementary school, the male student said that when he was a child, he often drew pictures and played interior design games for entertainment. By the 9th grade, Bao knew about the field of graphic design and realized that this was his passion. Since then, the 18-year-old boy spends every night after returning home from school to explore, discover new knowledge about the industry, train his thinking and aesthetic eyes through the projects of seniors in the industry.

“The most important thing is practice. I actively seek opportunities to practice skills, such as free design for friends, joining clubs, applying to clothing brands, music festivals. Since then, I have improved my skills a lot,” Bao confided.

“Personalize” the page of the book

Talking about the process of implementing the book series, Bao said that first, he had to learn and learn in depth about book design, because unlike graphic design, book design emphasizes the layout of paragraphs and images. “After that, I found inspiration from design styles in the world, finally came up with the idea for the book series and implemented it using Illustration, Photoshop and Indesign software,” the male student revealed.

A special feature in the pages of the book, according to Bao, is the emphasis on white space and information hierarchy, which helps students not feel bored by the large amount of information. “The attractive colors and images also make it easier to remember the lesson, because learning with pictures is always better than with words,” Bao said.

With the desire that each book has its own personality, acting as a friend of students, Bao does not “frame” himself in a fixed design style but applies many different options for each subject such as: retro, modern or minimalist style.

The male student confided: “By ‘personifying’ the book series, a student who loves physics will be more and more interested and proud of his subject, whereas a student who is not interested in this subject will want to discover more about it”.

In his project, Bao is most interested in the chemistry book. For Bao, this subject was “the worst nightmare”, until he learned how to minimize information and create mind maps. “That’s why, I applied this form in lesson design, helping people in the same situation have a good method to learn equations and phenomena more easily,” the male student said.
