Ryan Giggs trial: Ex-footballer had eight ‘full-on’ affairs behind Kate Greville’s back, court hears
Ryan
Giggs had “full-on” affairs with eight women behind his
girlfriend’s back, a court heard.
Kate
Greville, 36, broke down in tears at times on Tuesday as she gave evidence from
behind a screen, claiming that the former footballer had been cheating on her
since their relationship began.
She
alleged Giggs, 48, headbutted her after being confronted, describing it as a
turning point: “All the other times he’d hurt me … this was different. He
deliberately tried to hurt me.”
Ms
Greville also claimed that Giggs had kicked her out of hotel bedrooms naked,
once in Dubai and then again in London.
Ms
Greville told how she had planned to leave the ex-Manchester United star while
he was away on managerial duty with Wales in the autumn of
2020 after discovering evidence of his infidelity on his iPad.
She
told Manchester Crown Court: “The reality of what I had found on that iPad
was way worse than I could imagine. Eight women he was having affairs with
while he was with me. Full-on relationships.
“Constantly
since 2014, right from the very beginning. It was all there on his iPad in
black and white.”
The ex-Wales manager is on trial at Manchester
Crown Court accused of assaulting Kate Greville, 36, and subjecting her to
controlling and coercive behaviour from August 2017 to November 2020.
Ms
Greville, who cried a number of times while giving evidence from behind a
screen, said she had bought a flat in secret and had been in talks with lawyers
about custody of a dog she and Mr Giggs shared.
The plans,
that had been in place for four weeks, were sped up after an argument between
the two while out for dinner on November 1.
‘Get my
stuff, we’re leaving now’
Ms
Greville said she left Manchester’s Stock Exchange hotel, caught an Uber to the
home the couple shared in Swinton, and told her younger sister Emma – who was
house-sitting – to “get my stuff, we’re leaving now”.
Upon
arriving home, the Greville sisters began filling a car with belongings, only
for Mr Giggs to arrive 10 to 15 minutes later.
The
court was told Mr Giggs began removing items from the car, and Ms Greville hid
his phone as a “bargaining” tool to negotiate her leaving
the home.
There
was then a tussle for the device, which ended up with Mr Giggs on top of
her. As she screamed for her sister to help, Mr Giggs threw his arm back
towards Emma, the court was told.
Ms
Greville claimed that Mr Giggs took possession of the handset, and pushed
her head against the floor as he stood up.
Mr
Giggs is then said to have walked to a neighbour’s home and called the police,
telling Ms Greville: “I’m going to tell them that you attacked me, that
you’re a psycho, and you won’t leave.”
Ms
Greville told the court that she responded by saying: “I’m glad the police
are coming because you attacked me and I’ll tell them exactly what
happened.”
‘He
looked me straight in the eyes and headbutted me’
She
continued: “And that’s when he came towards me and headbutted me in my face. No warning
whatsoever.
“He
just came at me from nowhere and grabbed me by my shoulders and headbutted me
in my lip, in my face.
“I
was in shock. I fell backwards. My lip instantly swelled, I could feel it
straight away, I put my hands over my mouth and I was really worried because I
could taste the blood. I thought he’d split my lip.
“All
the other times he’d hurt me… this was different. He deliberately tried to hurt
me. He looked me straight in the eyes and headbutted me straight in the
face.”
The
jury were told of one such argument that resulted in Mr Giggs allegedly kicking
a naked Ms Greville out of bed at a London hotel and “throwing a laptop
bag” at her head.
The
court was also told that Mr Giggs would call Ms Greville “up to 50 times
an hour” if she didn’t respond to him.
He
denies the allegations. The trial continues.
End of
proceedings
That
brings us to a close for day two.
Thanks
again for reading, and do join us again tomorrow for day three.
‘This
could ruin me and it could ruin you’
Continuing
her evidence, Ms Greville said: “He only responded when my sister, she was in
the room, and I said to her: ‘you need to find out where the police are’.”
She
said this made Mr Giggs angry and he told her, “you need to think about this,
Kate, this could ruin me and it could ruin you. Think about my job, think about
my career, think about my kids”.
Ms
Greville told the court that her response to that was: “Well, you shouldn’t
have done it, then.”
Police
then arrived and arrested Mr Giggs, the court was told.
‘He
looked me straight in the eyes and headbutted me straight in the face’
We then
moved onto the incident of an alleged headbutt by Mr Giggs.
Ms
Greville told the court: “It moved into the kitchen, because he had my phone in
his back pocket.
“He
said: ‘The police are on their way, I called the police.’
“I
said: ‘I’m glad the police are coming because you attacked me and I’ll tell
them exactly what happened’.
“And
that’s when he came towards me and headbutted me in my face. No warning
whatsoever.
“He
just came at me from nowhere and grabbed me by my shoulders and headbutted me
in my lip, in my face.”
Asked
if Mr Giggs had said anything, she told the jury: “He didn’t say sorry, he said
nothing. He didn’t say anything to me.
“I said
I can’t believe you’ve just done that.
“I was
in shock. I fell backwards. My lip instantly swelled, I could feel it straight
away, I put my hands over my mouth and I was really worried because I could
taste the blood. I thought he’d split my lip.
“All
the other times he’d hurt me… this was different. He deliberately tried to hurt
me. He looked me straight in the eyes and headbutted me straight in the
face.”
‘As he
went to stand up, he pushed my head into the floor’
Peter
Wright QC asked Ms Greville: “Did your sister arrive?” To which she responded:
“Yes, she grabbed him around the waist. And then he pushed his arm back. It
would’ve been the right arm, he pushed his arm back to try and get her
off.
Mr
Wright said: “Did it make contact with her?”
Ms
Greville replied: “I couldn’t see if it made contact, but I assumed it made
contact.” Did she say anything?
Eventually,
Ms Greville said Mr Giggs took possession of her phone, and that she had hurt
her elbow, but wasn’t sure how.
She
told the court: “He managed to get the phone and then he went to stand up, and
as he went to stand up, he pushed my head into the floor.
“He got
up off me.
“I was
in pain on my elbow, the funny bone was really painful.
“I
thought at that point I’d broken my elbow. I was upset that I’d hurt my elbow.
I was saying ‘I think I’ve broken my elbow’ to him and to my sister.
“He was
just telling me to get out, to leave.
“And at
that point I said to Emma – we need to leave now, order an Uber.
“During
that time I was pleading with him, the Uber is on its way, ‘please give me my
phone back’.
“He
said to me: ‘You’re never going to see this phone again. You’re not getting it
back. You need to leave’.
“I saw
him go up to his neighbour and knock on the door.
“He
came back and said the police are on the way, he said: ‘I’m going to tell them
that you attacked me, that you’re a psycho, and you won’t leave’.
“He was
really angry, but quite with a cockiness to it. A bit like there was a certain…
he was quite baiting. He was trying to bait me, basically.”
The
tussle for Ms Greville’s phone
Then
followed a tussle for Ms Greville’s phone, which was in her bag in the
hallway.
She
told the court: “When he was telling me to leave, I was obviously saying I want
to go. But I was wanting to take my dog.
“He
didn’t want me to take the dog. He said: ‘I’m going to make sure you’re never
going to see him ever again. Say goodbye to him now’.
“He was
my absolute world, that dog. I got to the point that I knew he wasn’t going to
let me go with that dog. So I just sat on the floor.
“We
both saw my phone at the same time because I glanced over at my phone in my
bag. I stood up to run to get my phone. So I got my phone before he got my
phone.”
Asked
what happened next, she said: “Then it’s all a bit of a…I don’t really know
what happened. “
He
pushed me backwards and I ended up being on my back in the utility room, flat
on my back with him on top of me. With my phone in my hand.
“I had
my phone in my left hand and had it above my head on the floor and Ryan was on
top of me, pinning me down on the floor, trying to reach for the phone out of
my hand.
“I’m
trying to do everything I can. Pushing my face with my hand and kicking to try
to get him off me.”
Asked
if she had caused Mr Giggs an injury, she said: “One of my fingers went into
his mouth and one of my nails caught him. “I was shouting to my sister
for help, to say get him off me.”
‘I
hadn’t seen him that angry before’
Ms
Greville continued: “I was really upset at this point, I was saying: ‘Ryan,
please just let me go, please don’t unpack these things’.
“It
wasn’t everything because I still had a lot of things in the house. I was
pushing him, stopping him from taking the things out of the car.
“He was
very angry. I hadn’t seen him that angry before.”
Asked
about her own state, Ms Greville said: “I think the whole situation sobered me
up. I had had a few drinks, but the situation had just flipped and cleared my
head and I was okay.”
She
claimed Mr Giggs was not listening to her, and decided to take his phone from
the side in the hallway and hide it in the lounge as leverage to leave.
Ms
Greville said: “I put it in there – and I know that it sounds crazy – that I
could have a bit of bargaining power. ‘I’ll give you your phone back if you let
me go’.
“He was
really angry. He just kept saying to me ‘give me my phone back, you need to
leave, you need to get out, give me my phone back’.
Ms
Greville said: “I said I didn’t have it, I’ll tell you where it is if you just
let me go.
“He was
also telling me to leave at the same time, but obviously not wanting me to go.
He wanted me to leave, but not in that car.”
‘Get my
stuff, we’re leaving now’
At
that stage, Ms Greville called an Uber and when she was on her way home,
messaged her younger sister Emma who was housesitting and looking after the couple’s
dog.
She
said: “Get my stuff, we’re leaving now.”
Ms
Greville told the court: “So, Ryan had got me a car, it was in his name, but I
was insured on it. It was viewed as my car.
“Emma
had started packing some of the things in the car, I went upstairs and started
packing my things upstairs.
“After
about 10 to 15 minutes, I saw some lights outside and then I saw that Ryan had
arrived and two other people were with him.”
These
two people were the concierge at hotel Stock Exchange and Mr Giggs’ housekeeper,
the jury was told, who arrived along with Mr Giggs’ Range Rover.
Ms
Greville continued: “So then, I couldn’t quite believe he’d come back. For some
reason I didn’t think he’d come back to the house.
“I came
downstairs. He was unpacking everything from the car. He was bringing it out of
the car and putting it outside.”
Peter
Wright QC for the Crown asked her: “And in respect of where his car was
parked?”
Ms
Greville said: “He’d parked it behind my car, so I couldn’t get my car out,”
and added that the other people had left.
Mr
Wright summarised: “He’s there. Your car is blocked in. And he’s unpacking your
things from the car.”
The
argument that led to the alleged headbutt
The
court heard about the argument which led to the altercation on Nov 1 during
which Mr Giggs is alleged to have deliberately headbutted Ms Greville.
They
had travelled to the Stock Exchange hotel in Manchester around 4pm and planned
to have dinner and stay there.
By this
stage, Ms Greville had planned to leave Mr Giggs when he was away with Wales on
managerial duty, and she had signed for a flat in secret and talked to a lawyer
about their dog.
Ms
Greville told the court: “We were talking about it came up I was talking
to Courtney my friend, about a guy we mutually know.
“I
was speaking to my friend, this guy’s name came up and I said that he’d asked
me out for a drink and I’d said that I couldn’t believe he’d asked me out when
he know full well he had a girlfriend.”
Ms
Greville said Mr Giggs told her: “Why did you say he’s got a girlfriend,
why didn’t you say I’ve got a boyfriend.”
By this
time, it was only the couple in the restaurant, and Ms Greville said: “He
kept saying that I needed to apologise, he kept saying ‘apologise now’.
“I
was not prepared at that point to agree with him. At that point there was
nobody else there and he got up and stormed off, leaving me
“I
sat in disbelief that he had managed to twist this and turn it on me. I sat
there a bit embarrassed that he’d got up and then I followed, got up and
got to the room.
“He’d
packed up all my things and he said that I needed to get out of the room, ‘get
out, leave, I don’t want anything to do with you any more’.
“Obviously,
I knew everything he’d done and I had the proof for the first time ever because
he’d always convinced me it was all lies and I was going crazy. I finally had
this proof that he had been doing what I suspected.
“So
I blurted it out and that I’d seen messages and showed him some of the messages
that I’d seen.”
‘Blackmail’
email made Ms Greville feel ‘violated’.
The
jury were told again about the email sent from Mr Giggs to Ms Greville, which
was titled “blackmail”.
A short
time earlier, Mr Greville said: “He had sent me a naked picture of himself,
just randomly sent me a picture of him.”
Eight
minutes later, she said he sent him an email saying “please”.
And
then followed the blackmail email with a video attachment.
The
body of the message said: “I will send this to the group if you don’t.” Peter
Wright QC asked her: “How did you feel?”
Ms
Greville said: “I just didn’t know what…just because he’d sent me a naked
picture of himself. I thought it was a video of a sexual nature that he was
then going to send to the group.”
PW:
“How did that make you feel?”
KG:
“Like violated. Like, I felt I had no control over what he would do and his
actions. Like, just helpless, I guess. Just like I had to do what he wanted all
the time because if I didn’t he would threaten me with things, and it was going
to cause an issue with my job and my career.
“I
didn’t open it. I was mortified that he would put a video on my work email. I
deleted it and unblocked him.”
‘You
are finished. End of’
The
jury are now being taken through a second conversation from the spring of
2019.
During
it, Ms Greville accused Mr Giggs of being in a relationship with a woman called
Zara and Mr Giggs accused Ms Greville of being in a relationship with a
colleague called Rob.
Ms
Greville had blocked Mr Giggs on WhatsApp.
She
told the court that the defendant would threaten to share something with their
work WhatsApp group.
Asked
what that could be, Ms Greville said: “He wasn’t very rational. Possibly
something of a really private nature, of a really personal nature, that would
really embarrass me.”
Among
the emails sent to Ms Greville from Mr Giggs were:
1.
“ARE YOU F—ING DATING ROB IF YOU ARE, YOU ARE FINISHED. END OF.”
2.
“Call me or I will ask on the group if you are dating.
Now.”
3.
“Now. Hurry the f— up. I’m serious.”
4.
“I’m sorry to keep hassling you, doesn’t my erratic behaviour
tell you how much I love you. I won’t hassle you again. Have a good night and
sorry about before. X”
Messages
revealed
The
jury are being taken through messages between Kate Greville (KG) and Ryan Giggs
(RG) on WhatsApp. This is an extract from Mar 10 and 11, 2018:
KG: In
Sant Carlo, I want you with me RG: How was Scandos [Scandinavian business
partners]? KG: They’re drunk and hard work. RG: Weirdos. Is it hot there?
Mr
Giggs then asked if Ms Greville was going to take the Scandinavians to a
nightclub called Mahikis. When Ms Greville didn’t respond, Mr Giggs
messaged: “Oi. Rude.”
Mr
Giggs then blocked Ms Greville on WhatsApp.
The
following day at 11.03am, Mr Giggs said: “Sorry.”
KG:
“Why did you block me?”
RG: I
messaged you and seen you online and you didn’t reply.
KG: How
is that a reason to block me? What’s going on Ryan?
RG:
What? Jesus I’ve just told you why, and it’s not good enough.
Ms
Greville then told him in a longer message, “I don’t understand you…that’s
crazy”.
Kate
Greville in the witness stand
Ms
Greville is being questioned by the Crown’s Peter Wright QC about an incident
in Dubai in February 2020.
She
took pictures of a bruised wrist and knee which the jury have been shown.
Peter
Wright QC (PW): What caused the incident?
Kate
Greville (KG)We’d both been enjoying ourselves, had a good time together. Been
out for something to eat and had a few drinks. Walking back to the hotel room,
it was absolutely fine I and he said ‘you’re a liability when you’re
drunk’.
PW:
Were you drunk?
KG: I’d
had a few drinks, but I wasn’t drunk-drunk. I said: ‘I’m not drunk I’ve had a
few drinks. Why are you saying that? I’m not a liability’. He said: ‘You’re a
liability, I don’t like you when you’re drunk, you change’.
PW:
What about him? Was he drunk?
KG:
Probably the same, we’d had the same amount to drink.
PW: How
did it then end in terms of remarks on the way back to the hotel?
KG: We
got back into the hotel room.
PW:
What was the atmosphere like?
KG: Not
nice, because I constantly felt attacked by him, he’s having a go at me
again and it’s come from nowhere.
PW: How
did you seek to react? What was your form of dealing with that?
KG: I
tend to go really quiet and not react to anything and not say anything and that
starts to wind him up. ‘You’re just like my ex-wife’, he said and called
me her name. Called me Stacey.
PW: Was
that the first time he’d done that?
KG: No,
he used to do it all the time, it was like his ultimate insult. He knew that it
would really upset me.
PW: Did
he explain to you why?
KG:
Yeah. He would say that she used to make his life hell that she had a problem
with alcohol and I was just like her.
PW: Was
there an incident in hotel room?
KG: I
was saying I can’t believe you’re being like this, you’re just trying. This
event was after a series of other things. So I was just in disbelief because I
thought we would get somewhere.
Judge:
Perhaps if you just listen carefully to the questions.
PW:
What happened next?
KG: He
asked me to leave the room. He said you need to get your own way to the airport,
we were flying back to Manchester the next day. You need to get out, you
need to get your own car. So I said fine I’ll leave and started to pack my
things together. Had my bag on my arm, the handle over my arm. I was getting
ready to leave and he stood in my way and he was trying to stop me leaving. I
was pushing him, or trying to tell him to move because I wanted to go. He
grabbed my bag and he pulled my bag, really hard, to stop me going through the
door and I fell forward and banged my knee on the floor.

We’re

We’ll
be back at 2pm when Kate Greville will be in the witness stand.
Ms
Greville got checked for STD after ‘discovery of affairs’
After
she found the iPad, which she claims showed Mr Giggs had been having multiple
affairs, Ms Greville said she went tot he doctors to find out if she had an
STD.
It came
back clear, the court heard.
She
told a police officer: “I just wanted to just get away when he was with
Wales.
“I
made sure I’d blocked him on all my emails, made sure my friends had blocked
him.
“He
could tell something was up and he would ask me ‘what’s wrong’. I told him I’d
had a bad smear test… to get him off my back.
When
scrolling through Mr Giggs’ iPad, she said she found messages to his friends
calling her a ‘slag’ and a ‘silly cow’ and another message saying ‘I just need
the bars to open now so I can pull’, the court heard.
Mr
Giggs ‘had eight affairs during relationship with Ms Greville’
Ms
Greville told the police officer during her interview: “The reality of
what I found on that iPad. There were eight women that he was having affairs
with during the time he was with me. Full-on relationships.
“Constantly
since 2014, right from the very beginning.
“It
was all there on his iPad in black and white.
“I
knew if I even brought it up he would deny it.
“I
knew he was going away to manage Wales, about four weeks after I found out, so
I just put a plan in place to leave.
“I
sorted out a new flat, I wrote him a letter which I never got the chance to
send.
“I
knew if I confronted him about anything, it would just kick off.
“I
just made a plan to leave, and I kept it in for three weeks, which sent me
under.
“I
just needed to take a bit of control.”
Mr
Giggs ‘threw phone at Ms Greville’s head’
After
this incident, they split up once again.
Ms
Greville said: “He went and got the puppy, he was stood outside the door
with his puppy.
“[Mr
Giggs said]: ‘Let’s get engaged now, let’s go to Boodles to get the
ring’.
“Messaging
my friends, he came to my flat, he threw his phone at my head and it
smashed on the floor.
“He
threatened to get the laptop and throw them out the windows, but I stopped
them.
“So,
again, I gave into him and I went back again.
“That
was after about two weeks.
“I
got flowers every day for a week, my friends got flowers.
“I
went back because I had no energy. It was almost like he pressured me into
going back, it was easier to just go back because of how draining it was to
keep going back.”
Giggs
returns home drunk ‘not able to talk or walk’ and is ‘sick in sink’
The
couple did get back together, and they went to Ibiza.
At this
stage, Ms Greville said she had already moved back in with Mr Giggs.
She
continued: “We’d gone to see the dog, the puppy was coming in two
weeks.
“He
went out on a night out and he was playing golf all day, then went on a night
out.
“I
was working at our house.
“And
I could just feel something was wrong, I’d only got like two messages from him
all day.
“I
ended up not saying anything because I didn’t want to be the nagging
girlfriend.
“He
came home at 10pm, and I’ve never seen anyone so drunk. He couldn’t walk,
couldn’t talk.
“He
was sick in the sink… and then he passed out on bed.”
Ms
Greville told a police officer that she then did something she’d never done
begore – check her then boyfriend’s phone.
She
said: “He was talking to another girl, he’d been with another girl talking
about sex, he’d been with her.
“I
was like ‘you’re begging me to come back, I’ve moved in, we’re about to get a
dog and you’re still doing this’.
“I
was just not in a good state mentally, I thought this has to be it.
“I
saw him messaging this girl talking about sex on that night.”
‘If I
loaded the dishwasher wrong he would take the plates out and redo it’
By
January 2020, they were together again.
She
said: “We were all meant to go skiing as a company, and that’s when he
would be like ‘no, you are coming, there’s going to be no future for us if you
don’t come’.
“He’d
painted this picture of this dream life that I thought he’d take that away from
me
“I
ended up moving in with him
“During
lockdown it was on another level – lots of put downs, lots of putting me down
in front of people, take things out on me all the time, secretive with his
phone.
“My
dad got told he had cancer, and he didn’t even look up from his phone.
“He’d
constantly tell me I was moody, and he’d tell me to leave. He’d always want sex
at night, but then he’d give me a tiny bit of affection and I’d cling onto
that.
“Then
he’d buy me flowers. This went on for probably three months during
lockdown
“It
was always like I was numb to all that.
“I
knew what he was doing, he was gaslighting me where he would basically…
subtle things – one day I came down because I got dressed up for a Zoom interview
and rather than say ‘you look nice’ he would say ‘what the f—, why have you
got all dressed up for?’
“The
way I loaded the dishwasher was wrong, so he’d take them out and redo it.
“The
way I made the bed was wrong.
“It
was like I was his housemaid. If his tea wasn’t ready on time, or if it wasn’t
like the way he liked it.”
Mr
Giggs would call Ms Greville ‘up to 50 times an hour’
Mr
Giggs broke up with Ms Greville at his company’s work Christmas party.
She
recalled: “I left and he followed me down the road.
“Let
me just spend one more night with you, let’s say goodbye properly.
“I
said absolutely not, so then he just told me to f— off then.”
In the
new year, Mr Giggs would message Ms Greville 10 to 15 times a day.
This
ramped up to Mr Giggs at one stage calling Ms Greville up to 50 times an hour,
but she would not answer, the court heard.
He
would try to call her on his daughter’s phone or on his son’s number.
Ms
Greville recalled one message which read: ‘I’ve made a massive mistake, I’m so
sorry, we’re going to get a dog, you’re going to move in on this date,
you’ve got these houses to look at’.
“He’d
send me essays of the plan.”
Mr
Giggs ‘threw laptop bag at ex’s head’
Ms
Greville continued: “In December 2019, we were in London and there was
this girl, he was ridiculous.
“He
was staring at her, I could see it.
“Were
were in the club and he came over to me asking me if I was alright, I
said ‘I was I’ll be alright if you stopped flirting’.
“He
flipped.
“‘[Mr
Giggs said:] ‘How dare you accuse me of this, we’re over, we’re done’.
“I
ended up saying sorry that also I know that it’s going to get worse, because he
uses it to say it was wrong.
“This
one night he then you’re flirting with him, he left the club and we were with
his work friends and his agent.
“I
got back to the hotel and tapped to let me in.
“Took
all my clothes off, got into bed.
“He
kicked me in the back so hard that I flew off the bed and landed on the floor.
“I
was like, ‘what’s just happened’.
“He
grabbed me again, into the suite bit of the room, got my bag with my
laptop in and threw it at my head.
“He
left me naked in the lounge bit.
“Ten
minutes later, he grabbed me takes me back to bed and wants to have
sex.
“I
remember waking up in the morning, I woke up and you don’t instantly remember
what happened.
“I
remember asking him, ‘did you throw my bag at my head?’ and he was like ‘yeah,
because you accused me of flirting, you made me do it, you make me so angry
that you made me do that. It’s bad for me how angry you make me, you need to be
careful of that’.
“He
does something and then I’m the one who is made to feel really shit.”
Proceedings
back underway
At the end
of 2019, there was one significant event, Ms Greville said.
She
said in her police interview: “Around Christmas last year we went to
London and he would massively flirt with other people.
“I
don’t know whether he would do it to make me jealous, but whenever we were on
nights out he’d make a big fuss of everyone else, put his arm around them and
have a big laugh and completely ignore me as if I wasn’t there or wasn’t his
girlfriend.
“And
he’d also flirt with my friends.
“And
he’d even say to me, ‘does it bother that I flirt with your friends’.”
Short
break
We’ll
be back at Court 2 soon.
The
couple get back together again
Ms
Greville said: “He was still asking for me back.
“Then
I said ‘ok, let’s try to make this work’, and then he replied saying ‘I don’t
think it’s going to work’.
“I
don’t understand, you just begged and begged and begged’.
“Anyway,
we got back together in May 2019.
“And
it was actually ok.
“He
was a lot better than it had been.
“[Before]
it was like treading on eggshells the whole time and he would shoot me
down if I brought up anything on any other girls.”
Mr
Giggs ‘followed ex home from the gym’
After
finding out about the girl he flew to Barcelona with, Ms Greville said that she
had again decided to call time on their relationship.
She
told police: “That’s it, I’m done.”
But
then they once again got back together.
The
36-year-old continued: “I didn’t really want to get back with him, oh
maybe I did.
“Then
he turns up at the gym.
“He
followed me home, then he turns up to at my door.
“It was
the first time I’d let him in since I found out about this other girl.
“We
started talking about stuff, but then he flipped.
“I
said, ‘you need to get out, if you don’t get out of here I’m going to call
the police’.
“We
were shouting at each other.
“He
just got more aggressive, grabbed my lamp and smashed it all over the floor and
then left.”
All the
while, Ms Greville said Mr Giggs was asking her to get back together with him.
Ryan
Giggs ‘wanted sex all the time’
Ms
Greville said: “He wanted to have sex all the time.
“It
wasn’t pressuring me, but he was pressuring me.
“I
didn’t want it, but i did want it.
“He
was using sex to get to me.
“He
would send really sexual messages, he would randomly send sexual messages or
pictures.
“He’d
come to my house in the morning, we’d have sex, it felt like he was just using
me for sex.
“He
wouldn’t leave me alone, there was never a time when he didn’t want to have
sex.
“He’d
come round to mine to have sex, then flew to Barcelona with a different
girl.”
The
‘blackmail’ video
At the
end of 2018, Ms Greville said she found out she was the
“ex-girlfriend” and not the “current girlfriend” when a
third party told her.
She
told police: “So I split up with him, and this is where it really
started.
“This
is when it started to ramp up.
“I
finished with him, when I’d realised what he was doing with this one girl.
“I
didn’t have any proof, but I just think as a woman, you know.
“We were
still having sex the whole time.
“If
I didn’t reply to him, he’d message threatening my job, saying I couldn’t
work for him any more.”
She
then described an email she received from Ryan Giggs with the subject title
“blackmail”. It had a video attachment.
“It
was one of our videos that we’d done.
“[Mr
Giggs said]: ‘If you don’t respond to me or block me, I’m going to send
this to the group’.
“I
didn’t want to look at it [the video], so I don’t know what it was.
“It
could’ve been something funny or could be a sexual one.”
Ryan
Giggs employs his then girlfriend
In a
bid to get Kate Greville back, Mr Giggs asked her to come back to Manchester
and work for him.
Ms
Greville told police: “He said: ‘Come and work for me, come and work for
Gary [Neville] and the company’.
“But
he was always making me out to me be a bad person. It was pretty
horrific.
“She
[Stacey] would make up lies and tell it to him, and she would say ‘I don’t want
her anywhere near my kids’.
“Around
Christmas time in 2018 it started to get really bad with Stacey.
“He
was in another relationship at that time, two other relationships.
“We
went to Russia because I was doing the World Cup and I got a feeling there was
something with something else.
“I
came back and he was still there.”
Ms
Greville told a police officer she received an email which read ‘Just so you
know, Ryan has been in a relationship with another girl’.
“Then
he has a go at me for showing it, saying I’m not strong enough for the
relationship then I need to get out.
“He
said: ‘Don’t be so pathetic, you’re just being really weak’.”
The
night Mr Giggs left Ms Greville at a restaurant
Ms
Greville said: “We went out in a restaurant and he was on his phone.
“It
was a nice smart restaurant, he’d been on his phone for 20 minutes, I was like
‘people are looking just talk it’s embarrassing’.
“[Mr
Giggs said:] ‘I’m talking to my daughter’.
“He
flipped, got up, and walked out of the restaurant and left me by myself.
“He
did that, I was obviously really upset.
“I
was crying my eyes out, he’s now blocked me on his phone, I don’t want to go
back to the hotel room.
“He
got up in the morning, giving me the silent treatment.
“And
so he wasn’t speaking to me, refused to speak to me, and then I went to the sun
lounger and that’s when I got the email.”
The
email was allegedly a naked picture of Ryan Giggs that he had sent to Ms
Greville two weeks previously.
That
same picture was emailed to her from a man claiming that the image had been
sent to his wife.
“My
body was just in shock,” she said.
Mr
Giggs ‘threw Ms Greville out of bed naked’
Ms
Greville said: “We were in a club in Dubai and I could see on his phone he
was messaging a girl.
“I
said ‘are you messaging a girl?’, he was like… he flipped.
“‘How
dare you f—ing accuse me of that, it’s my daughter I’m messaging. How dare
you, we’re done’.
“We
got back to the hotel room, and I said something and again he flipped.
“I
had no clothes on, he grabbed me by my wrist, so hard, dragged me into the
lounge bit, grabbed my on the floor, all my suitcase and threw it all into the
corridor and then shut the door.
“I
was just there naked, all my stuff in the corridor.
“I
got all my stuff back in and got back into bed – I had to get my stuff
with a towel wrapped around me.”
Mr
Giggs flew out to Dubai to rekindle affair
Eventually,
Ms Greville decided to call time on their relationship.
She
said: “I blocked him on everything, off my emails, Instagram, off my phone
– everything.
“But
it was almost like I was addicted to it, I just just couldn’t get him out of my
head.
“I
think two months went by and he started messaging my friends. I checked my
emails and there were 30 emails from him.
“I
think he came out to Dubai, I can’t remember, saying, ‘we’re going to be
together. I want to start a family’.
“He
went back home and I found out that he was dating another girl.
“He
came back to Dubai again, no that’s nothing, she’s got a boyfriend and I
thought that was the end of that and I gave him another chance.
“I
stayed in Dubai for another year.
“[Ryan
Giggs messaged] ‘I want you to come back to Manchester, we’ll have a baby’,
he’d come out to Dubai a lot and I’d go back to Manchester to see him.
“There
was like two different people.
“The
person he was telling me he was, and the stuff I was hearing about.
“Was
he a good person or a bad person.
“I
started getting the most horrendous anxiety, to the point where I’d sit down
and feel like I’d just run a marathon and my heart was going.
“He
was just really good at convincing me that he was fine.”
The
world finds out about the affair
Ms
Greville told a police officer: “I decided I was going to leave, work in a
different country, to get away from him.
“In
my head he wasn’t going to chase after me because I wasn’t there.
“It
did. It carried on.
“This
isn’t right, this is not what anyone wants.
“It
didn’t sit well, it wasn’t exciting to me that he was still was with someone
else.
“He
kept pursuing and kept messaging me, he messaged me saying they’d split
up.
“I
found out they were.
“It
was complete mind games.
“Then
the media got hold of the fact we were together or something had gone on.
“Then
it all came out in May 2016 and it was horrendous.
“I
got hounded by the paps, I got emails from the media that my life was ruined in
Dubai.
“His
ex-wife and daughter were messaging me telling me to tell the truth.
“He
did actually support me throughout that whole thing.”
Ms Greville
moved to Dubai to get away from Mr Giggs
Ms
Greville continued: “I would try to stop it [the affair], we can’t do
this, this needs to end, you need to finish your relationship with Stacey and
then we can be together.
“I
stopped speaking to him, a couple of days or a week and he would message me
again saying ‘I can’t get you out of my head’.
“Then
he would turn up ringing my buzzer on my apartment, then I’d get a load of
abuse – ‘I bet you’re f—ing someone else in there, you’re a w—e’.
“‘If
you don’t reply I’m going to tell your boss what’s going on and it won’t look
good for you at work’.
“My
career was very important to me.
“I
felt like he was my soulmate, like those love stories in the movies.
“He’d
send me essays saying me and Stacey have split up and I’m living with my mum.
“I
made the decision to leave to Abu Dhabi and people would talk about it at work
and my boss sat me down and asked me outright if anything was going on.
“It
was affecting my work, it wasn’t good for me.”
The
signed shirt request that started the affair
Both
Ryan Giggs and Kate Greville were married to other people when they started
their affair.
It
happened when Ms Greville’s mother asked her to get a signed shirt from Mr
Giggs.
Ms
Greville, in her police interview, said: “Then my mum asked me to get a
signed shirt from him. [My marriage] He was really controlling, give me a
budget for money, give me an allowance, I was really not happy in that
relationship and we [Ms Greville and Mr Giggs] started talking about the
relationship.
“I’d
had an argument with David and I just wanted a something because I was feeling
s—.
“We
stared having an affair.
“I
knew when I went to the hotel to get that shirt signed I knew something would
happen.
“I
stayed for a drink.
“He
was the one who saved me from that marriage and he was my best friend, he would
talk to me for hours, he would support me, it was more than just sexual.
“He
was the love of my life, it was like he was my best friends.
“But
there were definite red flags, because he was still married and he would say I
want to be with you just give me time.”
How
Kate Greville met Ryan Giggs
The
court is being shown the video of Kate Greville’s police interview on Nov 18,
2020.
Officer:
“You’ve come in about an incident that happened a couple of weeks ago now
involving your partner and the officer I believe phonecall and an email
want to speak to us about it.”
Kate
Greville: “Shall I start from the beginning?
“I
met Ryan in think in 2013 I was working for PR agency called Tangerine and Ryan
and and his one of his business GG Hospitality employed my company to launch
his restaurants in London and Manchester – we got taken on.
“I
was doing quite a lot of work with Ryan, PR And media stuff, I think over a
course of a year or two years I started to notice that there was a definite
interest.
“I
was married at the time, not happily married.
“He
started to show me attention by, quite subtle things to begin with, I’m quite
into psychology and stuff so he would always use my name, he would say ‘Kate,
Kate, Kate’ it felt like it was a technique and I was like ‘I know
what you’re doing here’.
“He
was doing a media interview and he was just staring at me, he was just
looking at me constantly through this. I was unnerved by it a little bit, but
it was also quite flattering at the time.
“It
was literally it was a look that I’ve never had, it put me off guard.
“Over
time he would just email me pictures, pictures of where he was, and then
emails not about work.”
Full
Kate Greville police interview will be played to court – all 105 minutes of it
The
police interview of Kate Greville will take up the bulk of this morning’s
session.
The
Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) intend to play the entire interview, which is
an hour and 45 minutes in length, the Crown’s Peter Wright QC told Judge
Hilary Manley.
Ryan Giggs
back in the dock
With a
complete change of scenery, we are at a much more modern courtroom in
Manchester’s Crown Square Crown Court.

Who is
Kate Greville?
Kate
Greville is the former girlfriend of the defendant Ryan Giggs.
She is
now 36 years old.

STEWART NEWS LIMITED
They
first began a relationship in 2013, when Mr Giggs was still married.
At that
time, she was working for a public relations firm called Tangerine.
But as
their relationship grew, she was also employed by Mr Giggs’ own company.
Ms
Greville lived with Mr Giggs at an address in Swinton, Greater Manchester, with
their dog who they both “doted over”, the court heard.
She
also has work links to Dubai.
Ryan
Giggs’ ex-girlfriend will give evidence from behind screen
The
judge told the jury at Manchester Crown Court that Kate Greville will give
evidence from behind a screen so that she will only be visible to herself, the
jury and the barrister questioning her.
The
jury were told this was “very common” in court.
The 15
key moments from day one
1.
Ryan Giggs was mobbed by photographers as he arrived at
Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court
2.
It took four hours for proceedings to get underway owing to jury
issues, but eventually a panel of seven women and five men were sworn in to try
the case
3.
Opening the case for the Crown Prosecution Service, Peter Wright
QC told the court: “On the pitch his skills were abundant and a thing of
beauty. Off the pitch and in the privacy of his personal life and home and
behind closed doors, there was a much uglier and more sinister side to his
character.” He said that this private life “involved a litany of
abuse, both physical and psychological abuse of a woman that he professed to
love”.
4.
Mr Wright QC continued: “This was not a state of affairs
that was arrived at overnight or by chance. It was a deliberate cause of
conduct by him, calculated to gaslight her into doubting herself…to wear her
down.”
5.
The court heard how Kate Greville QC found out that Mr Giggs was
cheating on her. She left for Dubai, at which stage the former footballer went
after her and they got back together, the jury was told.
6.
Ms Greville had decided she was going to leave Mr Giggs, and
hatched a plan to move out of their home, the court heard. This plan was
executed with the help of her younger sister Emma who was house-sitting her
sister and Mr Giggs’ home while they were out with friends at The Stock
Exchange hotel in Manchester.
7.
Mr Wright told the jury the plan failed because Mr Giggs arrived
home as she was attempting to leave their house. An altercation ensued, during
which Mr Giggs “deliberately headbutted” Ms Greville and elbowed her
sister in the jaw, the CPS allege.
8.
The court heard messages sent from Ryan Giggs to his former
girlfriend, including one which read: “Please unblock me, all this
blocking malarkey is poo. Promise, no more naked piccies.”
9.
The jury were told that the pair were “almost
umbilically” attached to their phones, and that they would regularly block
each other on social media during their spats.
10. Mr
Wright QC said: “This was a turbulent relationship lived out in the public
eye. There is a case of considerable press interested… but this is not trial
by press or public opinion. His popularity is not a passport to an
acquittal.”
11. The
defence, through Chris Daw QC, said: “Mr Giggs fully accepts on a moral
level at times he was far from perfect. He also fully agrees that he did
not always handle their arguments in the best possible way. Some of his
messages showed a combination of immaturity and completely inappropriate
language.”
12. He
added: “The pair of them behaved like squabbling children, each of them
played on the insecurities of each other. Much of the evidence you will hear is
– especially the emotional outbursts – is exactly the thing that goes on behind
closed doors in relationships. Words said in anger may be instantly
regretted.”
13. There
are certain lines Mr Giggs would “never cross”, his defence barrister
told the court. “Physical assaults and violence, the defence says, are
simply false,” Mr Daw QC said. “He never once used unlawful violence
against Ms Greville, the allegations are simply not true.”
14. Addressing
the incident on Nov 1, 2020, when the CPS allege Mr Giggs headbutted Kate
Greville and elbowed her sister Emma, Mr Daw QC said it was a “nasty”
and “ridiculous” lie, adding: “Those accusations are based on
distortion, exaggeration and lies. He assaulted nobody that night.”
15. We’re
going to hear in some form from Sir Alex Ferguson and Gary Neville as well as a
number of Mr Giggs’ family at the trial, which is expected to last two weeks,
but jurors have been told it could go into a third week.
